The Role of Language in Indian Multiculturalism
Abstract
This research paper highlights the role of language in India’s multiculturalism. India is one of the most linguistically diverse countries in the world, where more than 1,600 languages and dialects are spoken. Language is not merely a medium of communication but also a foundation of culture, identity, and social unity. The Eighth Schedule of the Constitution recognizes 22 languages, reflecting the country’s cultural pluralism. The paper explains that language preserves cultural identity through literature, art, music, and traditions. It also notes that Hindi functions as a link language, while English connects India to global education and trade. However, linguistic diversity also presents challenges, such as the extinction of smaller languages and the demand for linguistic identity in regional movements. Education and literary festivals play a crucial role in the preservation and promotion of languages.
